You can get to the Island of Poel by car, bus or bike from the Hanseatic city of Wismar over the dam. People going by train cam make use of the bus connections to Gollwitz, Kirchdorf or Timmendorf, several times a day. In the summer the bus can also take you to the Schwarzen Busch. You can also get from Poel to Wismar or Boltenhagen by boat. The 37 km2 large Island on the shore of Wismar was first recorded in 1163. Impressive is the landscape because of the 12m high steep coast section, wide beach sections as well as wide, flat land with rare salt fields.

On the island you will find 15 small districts. The main district is Kirchdorf, which can be seen from afar due to its gothic brick church from the 12th/13th century and the church lake with a small fishing and sport-boats port .

You should not miss the tour of the church right up to the belfry. To take part in the tour you it has to be arranged with the parson or you can go Saturday afternoons after the organ music.

The museum of local history in Kirchdorf gives you an insight into way of life, culture and the line of business of the inhabitants of the Island. The first settlements of farmers were documented in 1210. They decided to settle on the Island, which had a rich tree population and rich humus soil. The consequence of the constant clearing was that by the 19th century, only the Schwarze Busch was left. It is now a protected area. Today you can find the memorial "Cap Arkona" amongst the magnificent trees.

The depths of the waters along the shore along the Schwarzen Busch and in Gollwitz are ideal for families with children. You will find the quality of the water, which gets checked every fortnight, very good on the whole of the Island. The climate on the Island is good for your health with a degree of purity that is present all year round. The therapeutic effect of the air can be felt during long walks. It is especially therapeutic for people suffering from chronic bronchitis, asthma, those that are prone to infections as well as people who have skin difficulties.

Experinece pure nature. The closely situated protected Islands Langenwerder and Walfisch as well as the protected area behind Wangern have ideal conditions for many mudflat and water birds. Thousands of birds rest here in spring and late summer on the salt fields and on the surfaces of water round the Island, which give you great observation possibilities. You can take part in tours as well as 'natural' hikes outside of the breeding season. Leisure activities such as fishing, horse riding, surfing, sailing, bowling, tennis, mini golf, archery and many more are all available on the Island.
